Lance Armstrong almost had me back in his camp last fall, when he announced that he would be partaking in the most extensive drug testing program ever, paying for it himself and publishing all the results. A few months after he got all sorts of positive press for that announcement, he quietly said "Never mind. Not going to do that after all."
What a dick.
He is posting results of drug tests by UCI, USADA and WADA on his web site, but let's keep in mind that these are the same impotent and incompetent agencies that have allowed the dopers to run roughshod over pro cycling to begin with. And, in fact, these are the same agencies that Armstrong himself (along with Landis and many others) says is screwing up the tests and unfairly leaking results.
From a PR standpoint, Lance is as careful as they come. Take a look at his statement from 2004 in the link above:
"I have said this before and I will say it again: I believe that I am the most tested athlete on this planet, I have never had a single positive doping test, and I do not take performance-enhancing drugs."
Let's examine that:
"Most tested athlete?" - OK, we'll accept that
"I have never had a single positive doping test" - Also true.
"I do not take performance-enhancing drugs." - Probably true at the time he made that statement. But, to my knowledge, Lance Armstrong has NEVER completely and thoroughly denied EVER taking drugs in his career. Only at the time he gives interviews. Which is exceedingly rare. Here's another take on it.
